People come in different sizes and shapes. Everyone is entitled to enjoy any sport they wish for. And one of them is stand up paddle boarding. This in demand water sport is for everyone!

Regardless if you have an ideal weight or if you’re overweight, stand up paddle boarding can be enjoyed to the fullest experience.

There are paddle boards for 300 lbs and up individuals. A must consideration is to make sure that the construction of the board is made from the finest and high quality materials that can support a heavier body built.

What are paddle boarding tips for big people?

Stand up paddle boarding offers so much positive influences to big people. Maybe a lot of them would want to start paddle boarding for the enjoyment and just for the experience.  They are not aware that it can turn their fitness around. It is a water sport that one can enjoy and also reap the reward through low-impact activity to lose weight and eventually becoming fit.

Walking can only burn 100 calories per kilometer. Do you know that in stand up paddle boarding, one can lose 50% more and sometimes double than walking? A longtime paddler can attest that an hour of paddling, can make you lose 1 kilogram overnight. It is also common to lose 900 calories per hour of paddling. And that’s pretty awesome!

The first thing to do to prepare for your stand up paddle boarding is to get an ideal board for you. Your first pre-requisite is a board that’s suited for you weight. The best paddle board for 300 lbs should be longer and wider. There are paddle boards available in solid and inflatable SUP’s.

One of the main fear of paddlers on the heavy side is will they be able to get back on the board when they fall in the water. There is a video available online for the technique to be able to do it. Please check the video below.

In this situation, one will need a stirrup, a connection of the stirrup to the board, and finally how to use the stirrup.  Make an improvised stirrup using a thick rope or a car rack strap. It should be something that will help you support your weight. Have it on your board attached either to board handle, tail loop or on the board’s nose. Make sure you make a loop and attach one end to the back of your board and the other end a loop for you to step on from the water. Measure the length. It should be enough for you to get back from the water to your board.

Next is to check that the connection of the stirrup to the board is strong and correct. See the video to double check the proper way to connect them.

Lastly, test it on shallow water. Falling from a paddle board is inevitable. Have a practice how to use it on shallow water. See if you can go back up using only one leg to the stirrup with your upper body helping you. If it’s not possible, use both your feet on the stirrup. Adjust to the desired length that you will need. They say a car rack strap is the most ideal because it has a metal clamp to adjust the length of your stirrup. Check again the connection to the very tail of the board.

A successful paddler who was once overweight, and now very fit has the best advice. If you are on the heavy built remember to:

  • Take it slow
  • Have Fun
  • Exercise
  • Get Calm
  • Get Fit

You will just wake up one day as a new transformed person without the pressure. This is the best possible way to overcome your fear, apprehensions, and frustrations.
