How To Choose A SUP Board Bag

Taking care of your paddle board is very important. Having a bag solely for it is one way of protecting it as your precious belonging. And for this, you would want to purchase a durable, heavy duty one but something lightweight too. You have bought a board that cost you and caring for it is something you need to do.

What do you need to consider in purchasing a bag for your SUP or iSUP? Here’s a guide to find the best bag for your paddle board:

Pick the right size

Picking and choosing the right size is the first thing you should look for in a paddle board bag. You need a bag that could hold and store everything you need such as a paddleboard, paddle and all your accessories that will ensure an easy trip to your paddling destination. Look for a bag that you will able to be easily load and unload your board. It would be more convenient not to have a hard and stressful time to do this.

Another crucial factor is you should know the size of your board. In this way, you can determine the size of bag that you’ll be needing. All boards come in varied sizes and shapes. For example, multi-person boards will be wider to accommodate more paddlers to move about on. If you have a wide board, then you need to find a wider board bag. Most board bags are available in different array of lengths, but the width is another story.

Lastly, it will matter to find a bag that is not stretchable or straining. Find the perfect size match for your board. If there is none, it’s better o settle for some bag that has a little more ample space that a tight fitting one, that might break your board.

A bag for mobility and storage

It’s like having both these benefits in a bag. A solid board needs a bag with a comfortable shoulder strap. A lot of padding would be perfect especially in times of storage. A solid board needs all the protection it can get especially during travel and storage.

Inflatable boards have to use a different bag for it could be deflated and rolled up after use. Inflatable boards have packages that come with their own storage and travel bag. If they don’t,   a backpack type of bag is the best bet to go. Look for a bag which has good attributes and can have the function to balance the weight evenly and has comfortable shoulder straps. You should also be looking for a bag which has a durable and supported bottom for storing your inflatable when not in use.

Right amount of padding

Having the right amount of foam is likewise necessary in protecting your board. When travelling and in transit, your board can be shaken, bumped or turned. A foam padding and lining in your bag can greatly shield your board from damages.

A downside would be, the more foam your bag has, the heavier and bulkier it could get. The law of compensation and compromise would be in play here. The lesser the foam, the more lightweight and compact your bag would be but it would give lesser protection too for yor board.

The lesser the foam would also equate the board bag being cheaper. When you are choosing your bag, try to find a balance between the price, the amount of foam, and the weight of the bag. We would recommend more foam padding if you can purchase it and can carry it.

Heat Protection

The sun will be out there when you go paddle boarding. A SUP bag should have a sun protection both in the exterior and interior of the bag. Some bags have reflective and silver exterior to reflect the heat and it will keep the inside of the bag cool. Just like you, you put your sunscreen on your skin when you go out. This will protect your skin from the harmful heat from the sun. A board bag without a reflective layer would only keep your board but it will still accumulate the heat inside. And this will still damage your board.

Remember in transporting your solid board, it will be on top of your car roof rack. This is way exposed to the direct heat of the sun. Get a bag with a protective lining to ensure your board’s protection from the heat of the sun.

Compartments

Another useful features are pockets and compartments in the bag. They are very useful in keeping, storing and holding up your essentials and accessories in place. Great too for holding those fins when you detached it from your board. Find a bag with pockets and compartments that are big to fit those fins and other gears you might want to bring along with you.

Fin slots

This would be important for a solid board. Some fins are removable and can be placed in a bag. There are also solid boards with fins that are fixed and cannot be removed or detached from the board. You need to be able to find a bag with a fin slot or fin slots depending on how many fixed fins your board has. This could be from one to three fins.

The bag must be able to fit and accommodate all the fins of your board. These fin slots will be perfect to cover and protect your whole board.

There are bags for made especially for those inflatable paddle boards that mostly have removable fins. Choose from a backpack, a carry bag or a wheeled backpack or carry bag.  This is a great way to bring your board almost anywhere and everywhere!

Deck Bags

Why is a deck bag important to have on a stand up paddle board?

Avid paddlers usually go out for a longer period of time. It might be a few hours or more. You need a deck bag to store your food, snacks, water and even other essentials. There are other options to choose from like a dry bag or a waterproof bag or backpack. A waterproof back might be too bulky and space consuming. A dry bag on the other hand might be limiting and doesn’t have too much features in them. Your best option would be a deck bag. For one it’s waterproof like a dry bag and at the same time has many compartments, mesh pockets, a bungee system and might even include other exciting features.

What do you have to consider in choosing a deck bag?

Most SUP deck bags require four open D-rings on the nose of your board for a safe and secure installation. Check the deck bag for these functions and if none,  find a SUP deck attachment kit.

More information about your SUP and iSUP bags

Do I really need a deck bag on my paddle board?

Yes, definitely it would be very beneficial to have a deck bag on board. You want to have that secure bag to hold your additional accessories, items, and food. Even when you are on a short paddling time, a deck bag can give you the storage options which you need. The best benefit though is when you’ll embark on longer paddling adventures!

You can always take a backpack with you, but you will soon find that your shoulders get tired, especially if you are paddling too. With a dry bag, you get a waterproof bag, but you do not get the separate compartments. A deck bag gives you a place to store and organize all of your accessories, and do so in an organized way. They can be easily attached to your board with a velcro strap or to your d-rings.

Does my SUP needs to match my SUP bag?

Of course! A right fit is the best for your board. If it does match the length of your board, then you can get maximum protection. A bag which fits well will stop the board from moving side to side inside the bag and will have the tendency to be damaged. There should always be sa slight allowance when manufacturers make their bags. They have a uniformed extra room to ensure your bag will fit your board will have a little extra allowance to it.

If you get a bag which that is quite small, then the board will be forced to be squeezed in the bag and can be damaged along the process of doing so. They will be at risked of damaging the board more.

Does a SUP bag protect my board from the heat?

As mentioned earlier, not all SUP bags have the capability to prevent the heat from penetrating your board. A bag that can reflect the heat away from the bag is the best option. You wouldn’t want the heat to be stored in the bag because it will create moisture that can affect and ruin your board. Although paddle boards are designed to be waterproofed, too much moisture can still damage it. Just remember to purchase a bag with a reflective layer and a UV protection to keep the heat from your board.

Will it be okay if I keep my sup in its bag all day while outside?

It’s not advisable to keep your board in a bag all day outside. The heat will continue to try to penetrate your bag. It can build up through a period of time and can cause damage to your board. Too much exposure to the sun or being in the bag for too long is not very good especially when not in use. We would recommend getting your board out of the bag but keeping it safely covered.

Do all board bags have a fin slot?

No, not all board bags have a fin slot. If your board has a fin which cannot be detached, then you need to look for one which does. If you buy a bag without a fin slot to it, and your board has a permanent and fixed fin, then you are likely going to damage it. You can find a bag with fin slots very easily. Just check on all available SUP bags available in the market.

A sup bag is a magnificent way to not only bring your paddleboard anywhere, but it also safely stores your board. You paid a large sum of money for your board so protecting it and having it around with you is very important. These sup carrying bags are here to stay to make transporting your paddle boards with you in any chosen destination of yours!
